Within Mechatronics, there is a combination of mechanisms, sensors, actuators, drive electronics and the software to link them all together in a digitally controlled system.
Mechatronics Engineering has been described as “mechanical engineering design for the 21st century”. While this description is mostly true there are some aspects of mechanical engineering that are not covered in Mechatronics.
The new degree combines fundamental engineering courses from mechanical engineering, and from electrical and computer engineering. A Mechatronics engineer develops a systemsapproach to design and development, and is able tocombine mechanical design with electrical and computer design to produce new smart products.
The combination of professional mechanical, electronic, and software engineering gives the Mechatronics engineer the ability to integrate skills from these disciplines. This is invaluable for development team leaders as well as team members. This systems overview, combined with detailed knowledge, is in worldwide demand.
The Mechatronics degree consists of an Engineering Intermediate Year, followed by three Professional Years. Students are also required to meet the Practical Work Requirements.
After graduation with a BE(Hons) many students work in industry and gain IPENZ recognition as Professional Engineers. Some who achieve high level passes in the various professional years may go on to undertake advanced research based degrees at Masters and Doctoral level.
A mechatronics engineer can apply for almost any job advertised in product development or team leader, as well as most electronic and mechanical engineering work.
Mechanical Workshop Training
“In order to become familiar with mechanical workshop processes, and the safe use thereof, you are required to undertake mechanical workshop training in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (not the basic mechanical workshop training offered by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) in the use of hand tools, drilling, milling, turning, and welding. The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers this 35-hour training course in the evenings or during the holidays in our dedicated training facility. You may also complete this training at an approved establishment.
It is strongly recommended that first year students with little or no experience with engineering tools complete the core workshop course before the start of the second semester.
Students should enrol in a Mechanical Workshop Training course via the Online Workshop Enrolment website. Classes will be finalized and students notified of their confirmed class groups shortly thereafter.
Electrical Workshop Training (ENEL198)
An electrical workshop course conducted in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering must be completed by all Mechatronics students before enrolment in the 2nd Professional year.
The Electrical Workshop is run by the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Electronics Laboratory. During 2015 the Electronics Laboratory will be located next to the Kirkwood Village units and recreation centre. Refer to map (PDF, 168 kB).
If you do not attend the workshop course you booked into, you will not be able to enrol for any of the other courses in that year, unless exceptional circumstances prevented your attendance.
Electrical Workshop courses are booked via the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering’s web-based booking system on the resources webpage: Log on with ENG\username. Note the back slash!
There are time constraints associated with the booking system. Students wishing to move their booking must do so at least 5 days before the start of the course. This allows other students the opportunity of booking into the vacated slot(s) for 3 days, prior to all bookings finally closing 2 days before the start of the course.
The Electrical workshop course is $150 (GST incl.).
Students who believe they are exempt from the Electrical Workshop course should obtain approval for the exemption from Jac Woudberg prior to 13th March 2015.
First Aid Certificate
While you are enrolled for a B.E.(Hons) Degree, you must complete a University approved first aid course, or, at some stage during your three Professional years, hold a valid first aid certificate. Approved courses qualify a student as a trained first aid person as described in the guidance notes published by the Department of Labour to help employers comply with Health and Safety legislation.
